Chapter Thirty-four

"First of all, monsieur, you must learn to be social," said Sade.

"I have to entertain people before I kill them?"

"Monsieur Bridgewater, you must win the victim over, and it is not always nécessaire to kill. Although I would admit that there is an extraordinaire rush to overeating occasionally, but monsieur, at the rate you feed, you would eventually empty the world of our prey. We shouldn't do that."

Sade pushed Keith's wheelchair down Embarcadero. Not many people roamed the street at that late hour, but both men kept their conversation to hushed tones.

"By now you should know the orgasmic thrill of mixing feeding with sex," Sade went on.

Keith twisted around in his chair to look up at Sade.

"Ah, non! I cannot believe that you have not taken advantage of the charms you now possess as a vampire."

"What the hell are you talking about?"

"Sit back, monsieur. You look so uncomfortable twisted around like a bretzel. We vampires are sought after, dreamed about, and glorified in dark tales. Non-vampires bleed each other, seeking the special high that only we can truly attain. Oui, we are lucky creatures."

"Dammit, Mr. Sade, remember I can't walk. I don't feel lucky."

"We will work on the mishap that occurred at your birth. I mean, of course, at the time of your crossing over into becoming a vampire." Sade certainly believed that Keith's birth as an infant was truly a mishap, but avoided confrontation with the man.

"What went wrong?"

"I don't know, monsieur. Certainly my mother-in-law had no intention of making you a vampire. You would not have been worth the risk."

"But my son was. Wasn't he?"

" Oui, although even he might have been passed over, except for the misunderstanding she and I had. She always challenged me.

I do not miss the wicked woman."

They moved on in silence, Sade ruing the fact that he had agreed to turn his mother-in-law into a vampire and knowing that Keith had no

fond memories of the woman. A bond seemed to be growing between the two men. How distraught Marie would be to find out that Keith still existed. And how much more pain it would cause her to know that Sade intended to seek to make Keith whole.

The fantasy bubbled into a smile upon Sade's lips.

Two male youths clinked bottles as their drunken feet struggled down the street.

''Now there's easy prey," Keith mumbled.

"Ack, monsieur, they are drinking cheap beer, and who knows what other rotgut is flowing through their veins. If I offered you a choice between the finest champagne or a cheap sparkling wine, which would you chose?"

"I drink beer, nothing stronger. Maybe wine if my son wants us both to look classy. I kind of like the beer they're drinking, matter of fact."

" Et tu bois cet alcool brûlant comme ta vie

Ta vie que tu bois comme une eau-de-vie. . . "

"What does blood taste like to you, monsieur?"

"Like blood. Doesn't remind me of anything else."

"Does not each victim have his or her own essence? A tingle on the tongue, a spicy burn passing down the throat.
